Movie Review: Fifty Shades of Grey

I heard about the book sometime early last year. All my friends were reading it and going gaga over the book. Everybody I know seem to have read the book except me.

This is not the type of book I read. I read mostly true stories and autobiographies. And besides, Vito told me, ‘Mom, don’t read that book. It’s a ‘Mommy porn’. Which made me laugh so hard. I told him I have no intention of reading the book.

Yesterday, Roxanne and I were invited to a private showing of the movie in Bonifacio High street 3. A friend of ours sponsored the 7:45pm showing.

And so we went.

I entered the movie without knowing what it was all about. All I know it is suppose to be a ‘sexy’ film. I was more interested to watch Dakota Johnson. The daughter of 2 powerful actors in Hollywood, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

Christian Grey, the lead character, is into bondage. If you don’t know what ‘bondage’ is, Bondage or ligotage is consensually tying, binding, or restraining a partner for erotic, aesthetic and/or somatosensory stimulation.  Rope, cuffs, bondage tape, self-adhesive bandages, or other restraints may be used for this purpose.

Now, get the picture?

I am not that type. I am all about romance. I am all about dinner date, movie date, holding hands.

But there are people like that. Like the character of Christian Grey.

Now, he met Anastacia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson. An innocent graduating college student and a virgin. Who doesn’t have any idea what she was getting into.

My favorite scene of the movie was when Grey invited Ana to look at his ‘playroom’. And Ana innocently asked Grey: “playroom? like xbox?”

I think they censored a lot of scenes that’s why I had a problem with the continuity of the story.

This movie is good to watch so you will be educated about ‘Bondage’ and the ‘Submissive-Dominant” thing.

I am glad I watched this only because another world was open in my eyes which I never knew existed.

  • I have read the first 2 books…and was hooked. On the 3rd book they were already married. I just read the first few chapters and didn’t continue. Unfortunately, I live now in a conservative Muslim country. I bet if this is R18 in the Philippines this movie will never be shown here.

  • I’m so glad Vito told you not to read it. I haven’t read the book and have no plans of doing so, much less watching the movie. Like you, I love reading non-fiction. Memoirs are my current favorites. And like you, I love romantic stories. There is a film “Old Fashioned” that will be shown in the US at the same time as Grey will be shown. It’s an alternative to those who aren’t fans of Grey. I hope it’ll be shown here as well.
